The Shaker Historical Society & Museum, 16740 South Park Blvd, Shaker Heights, OH announces a new exhibit “Out of the Closet: Rarely Seen Textiles from our Collection.”

“Out of the Closet: Rarely Seen Textiles from our Collection”
February 12-June 30, 2015
Museum Hours:
Tues – Fri 11-5 pm and Sun 2-5 pm. Closed Holidays.

This exhibit will be on display February 12 through June 30, 2015. Come to the museum to get a rare glimpse at our textiles—usually kept in Hollinger boxes in closets upstairs. The collection includes clothing from the Shakers of North Union, from Clevelanders and Shaker Heights residents, quilts, hats, shoes and doll clothes.

Since most pre-industrialization fabrics were processed and dyed by hand with natural pigments, these colors are especially susceptible to light damage.
Textiles should be laid flat for long term storage as hanging often stresses fibers. As such, this exhibit will have changing elements to ensure their long term preservation.

This exhibit owes a great deal to William and Mary sophomore Kate Connors who catalogued this collection last summer as our Collections Intern. Thanks also to former intern Diana Tebo for her work on the doll collection.
