Polling Coordinators Report 'Steady' Voter Turnout So Far

Turnout has been steady, but opinions on Issue 1 are split down the middle

Polling coordinators in Shaker Heights say Election Day turnout is solid so far with few or no waits.

"It's been very steady so far," said Karen Morrow, polling location coordinator at Mercer Elementary School. "These people are interested in issues and they're coming out to vote.

"Whenever there's a vote in this city or the county, they come out in droves like they are today."

Nenita Readus, who holds the same title at 's polling location, said much of the same.

"We've had no rushes, but a steady flow," she said.

Both coordinators said no time of the day appeared to be more busy than the others.

Meanwhile, voters that would bring in $6 million to the city as it tries to replace anticipated losses from state funding.

Jonathan Munetz, who recently moved back to Shaker after finishing his graduate studies in Wisconsin, voted 'yes' on the issue while at Shaker Middle School.

"I voted for the increase because it seems like just like in Wisconsin, (Gov. John Kasich) is pulling some funny business with the state budget and is basically scoring political points by defunding cities," Munetz said. "This is a good community and it's worth maintaining city services for a small tax increase."

Though, city residents Dan Frericks and Molly Ritts had an impromptu debate over the quality of Shaker Schools, both said they did not vote in favor of Issue 1. Coincidentally, both said their spouses cancelled their votes out.

"We've got three votes against it here — me, my wife and another lady we have with us," said a man at Shaker Middle School who wanted to remain anonymous. "I voted against it because I don't want the taxes to go up.

"I expect it to pass, Shaker always passes everything."
