Prestigious Scholarship Given To Shaker Heights Student

Ruby Gibson has been named the recipient of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa award from the Cleveland Association.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Shaker Heights High School student Ruby Gibson has been named the recipient of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa award from the Cleveland Association. She will receive $1,000 each year for four years.

The award Gibson won recognizes students who meet the highest standards of academic achievement and scholarship. The future Northwestern student is looking forward to pursuing a liberal arts education.

Gibson said that a liberal arts education provides a key pathway forward for those that aren't sure where they want to be. “For me,” she said, “a limited future is much scarier than an unclear one.”

The Cleveland Association of Phi Beta Kappa invited Beverly Warren, President of Kent State University, to deliver the Keynote and share words of wisdom with the more than 300 students, parents, teachers and association members in attendance.

Reflecting on the day, Association President Deborah Wilcox shared, “It was a great day. Dr. Warren’s speech reminded students to take chances and not be afraid of failure, and Ruby’s speech reminded the rest of us how much potential the next generation has to change our world for the better.”
