Science Curriculum Overhaul Update: Shaker Schools

A staffer at Shaker Schools outlines some details on how the district is enhancing its science program in elementary schools.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — The Shaker Heights School district announced in May that it planned to improve its science class and experience offerings for elementary school students. On Friday, the district released part of its plan and the progress that has been made to this point.

In a letter to parents, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Terri Breeden outlined the various steps the district has taken to enact a new science strategy. The district's director of curriculum met with elementary school teachers to discuss science needs. Superintendent Gregory Hutchings also met with PTO leaders to discuss K-6 science changes. Elementary schools were then surveyed electronically. The director of curriculum then met with community science providers to try and identify appropriate curricular materials, laboratory facilities, and field trip opportunities.

This led to the formation of a new science advisory group, which will include a science teacher, higher education personnel, scientists and employees of STEM-related organizations and businesses. A science professional then identified science kits that would align with Ohio Learning Standards for grades K-8.

A teacher at Woodbury determined laboratory equipment that will need to be part of K-4 science instruction.

"We will share our full science curriculum plan with parents during our curriculum night in the fall of 2017. In the meantime, we will keep you updated on our progress," Breeden said in her letter. "As promised, we are also working with our PTO Council to ensure parents are informed."
