Shaker Heights Condemns Minnesota Police For George Floyd's Death

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — This week, Shaker Heights City Council passed a resolution condemning the death of George Floyd. The resolution expresses "outrage at the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department."

The resolution has six main sections, each making a separate statement about recent events.

• Section 1 — Shaker Heights City Council, "condemns the murder of George Floyd and
  demands that the perpetrators be brought to justice."
• Section 2 — Supports peaceful protests
• Section 3 — Commits city officials to deliberately seek out constructive and honest community input on where racism exists in Shaker Heights and how it can be addressed. "These actions must be concrete and intended to bring about real change and we will consistently measure our success or failure to bring it about," the resolution said.
• Section 4 — Commits the police department to resisting racism, following de-escalation tactics and recruiting more black police officers
• Section 5 — Commits city council to creating a safe and healthy environment for everyone
• Section 6 — Puts the resolution into effect immediately

Last week, Shaker Heights Mayor David Weiss pledged to work towards racial justice in the community.

"We seek to strengthen established partnerships and create new ones that will help us as a community to deepen our understanding and sharpen our focus on systemic racism, and to help us do the hard work of reevaluating systems and structures that create barriers for people of color," Weiss said.
