Shaker Heights Police Warn Residents and Businesses About 'Movie Money'

Criminals are using prop money to buy goods from stores in the neighborhood.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - Police are warning residents about a fake currency scam that has hit several local businesses.

According to a statement, 'Motion Picture Use Only' money has been making its way throughout Shaker Heights in a variety of denominations. Officers say that while the money is obviously fake, the quality of the paper and the close resemblance to actual currency has managed to confuse some people.

"Business owners and private buyers should be aware that this is being used throughout the area. We stress that it is not illegal to possess this money, but it is a crime to use this fake money to purchase something," said the statement. "We are asking that parents have an honest conversation with their children about using this type of money. Unfortunately most suspects in this type of crime have been juveniles."
