Shaker Library Offers Virtual Baby Signing Classes
Nancy Barnett will lead Butterfly Hands, signing classes for toddlers ages 18 months to 2½ years in January

In January, Shaker Library will begin Butterfly Hands, an online series of sign language classes for toddlers ages 18 months to 2½ years with a grown-up. Participants in the six-week introduction to signing will learn basic signs through songs, fingerplays, flannel boards, and interacting with Sammy the “signing dog” puppet. Classes will be held from 11 am to 11:30 am on Wednesdays beginning January 13.
Shaker resident Nancy Barnett, a teacher and interpreter of American Sign Language, will lead the classes. Barnett has taught sign language classes for 21 years at the Early Childhood Enrichment Center as well as at the Mandel JCC. She has also taught private lessons and has led in-person classes at Shaker library. Barnett is a certified BabySigns instructor but prefers to use her own curriculum, Butterflyhands, which uses ASL."
Why is sign language important? “There is much research on the benefits of signing with babies and young children. My top three reasons for teaching it are that it reduces frustration by giving them the means to communicate, which in turn leads to fewer tantrums; it builds confidence; it provides a bridge to the spoken word, and it enhances cognitive development,” says Barnett.

The virtual classes will be held on Zoom so parents will have a virtual way to stay connected. The class is just one more way the library helps families develop a lifelong love of learning together. “Babies have a lot to say, even when they don't have words to express themselves. Sign language can help babies and grown-ups communicate with each other, plus it can boost language acquisition and reduce frustration. Add in rhymes and songs, and it can also be a lot of fun,” says Youth Services Manager Shannon Fischer Titas.
