Shaker Schools Forming Equity Task Force

The district wide initiative will help the Board of Education formulate and adopt an equity policy that can be installed district-wide.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - The school district is forming an Equity Task Force, which the district says will "explore the assets and challenge of embracing and moving toward equity for all students." Specifically, the group will focus on aiding children of all races achieve at high levels. Ultimately, the task force will be responsible for recommending a district-wide equity policy to the Board of Education.

The group's formation was announced on the district's website. Included in the announcement, was news that two members of the Equity Task Force have already been appointed. Superintendent Gregory Hutchings appointed The Rev. Colin Jones and Lisa Vahey to co-chair the Task Force.

Jones was installed as a pastor at Shaker Heights Community Church in 2012. He is a Columbus native, cleveland.com reported at the time. He also serves as a hospice chaplain for the city of Cleveland, the district says.

Vahey is a Shaker parent, the district says, and is a classroom teacher, and volunteer. She has also served as a consultant to other school districts who are members of the Minority Student Achievement Network.

The district is looking for more volunteers to fill out the task force. You can fill out an application for a position here. Six members of the community will be chosen to serve. Applications will be reviewed through Feb. 22.

The group will consist of teachers, staff, administrators, students, and community members. Volunteers will serve a two-year commitment.
