Alleged Marijuana Edibles At Shaker School, District Investigates

The school district said it is looking into the distribution of possible marijuana-laced gummy bears at Shaker Heights Middle School.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH— Suspected marijuana-laced gummy bears were possibly shared at Shaker Heights Middle School this week.

"We are investigating the alleged distribution and/or consumption of “edibles”—candy combined with marijuana—by a small number of students at the Middle School," Scott Stephens, director of communications for Shaker Heights Schools, told Patch in an email.

Both parents and Shaker Heights Police have been informed of the incident, Stephens confirmed. He added the district believes it has identified the source of the gummy bears and that there will be no further incidents.

"We want to make clear that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. The District’s Student Handbook prohibits the use, possession, sale or distribution of any illegal drug, even if the drug is counterfeit. Students found in violation may face discipline up to and including suspension," Stephens added.

The district has not been able to confirm the gummy bears were laced with marijuana. In fact, Stephens told Patch, the first test on the candies came back negative.

The gummy bears were reportedly handed out on a school bus, the district told Fox 8. Security footage from the buses has been reviewed by school officials and students involved in the incident have been identified.
