Solicitors Bothering Shaker Heights Residents

A group that does not have permission to solicit in the city has been going door-to-door selling magazines. Have they hit your home?

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — A group claiming to a "second chance" program was reportedly soliciting throughout the city over the weekend, Shaker Heights police said on Facebook. The group was selling magazines and book. The solicitors told residents they were trying to earn money to go to college.

Shaker Heights Police said they do not know whether or not the organization is remotely legitimate. Even if the group is legitimate, it did not take the steps to get permission to solicit in the city.

Residents told police when they declined to purchase magazines from the solicitors, they were asked to hand over money to help with a "points system." Each solicitor said they were trying to "better themselves." (To stay up to date on these stories, subscribe to the Patch Shaker Heights newsletter. Police said they are now aware of the group because of the sheer number of calls they received complaining about the solicitors.

"We are asking that if such a group comes to your door, please give us a call. We would like to speak to one of the representatives to properly identify the group and their true intentions," the department said on Facebook. "Thank you for your help with this concern and have a great weekend."
