Spring sports roundup: Boys’ Tennis
How did the Shaker Heights High School boys' tennis team do this year? Here's a quick summary.
2012 Record: 9-8 (7-6 last year).
Head coach: Pat Day.
Season highlights: Team won the Lake Erie League title for 2012 over Cleveland Heights, Euclid and Lorain. Senior Peter Smetona was named the Plain Dealer’s Player of the Week on May 18th. He qualified for the 16-player state tournament in singles and was named the LEL’s player of the year.

Graduating seniors: Smetona, No. 2 singles player Jake Lacks and doubles team Tyler Straffon and Matthew Wood.
Potential returning starters: Freshmen Mateo Burrull and Omar Ragab and sophomore Kornel Foremski.

Coach’s comment: “Peter Smetona finished No.1 at the Solon sectionals and went to Oberlin (regional), placed there and qualified for the states. He was in the top 16, won his first match so he was in the quarterfinals against Colton Buffington (Westlake), the eventual champion who was undefeated. So it took the state champion to knock him out. He had a good season.”
