The City of Shaker Heights has considered red light camera traffic enforcement which touched off a controversy with it’s local chamber of commerce who considers it a deterrent to small business. Debra Hegler, president of the Shaker Heights Chamber says, “it’s not a safety issue, only a revenue generator”, she called the devices “red light cash machines for the city”. The mayor disputes this view and says this is a safety issue. Traffic & injury reports do not indicate a traffic safety problem with only 1 traffic fatality in each of 2011 & 2012. Debra states, “safety is one of the reasons people live & work here”.
Ms. Hegler also states, “We are proud of our endorsement and happy to put this issue aside with the support of the state legislature for now”. She thanks Rep. Maag & Mallory who introduced this bill and the legislature for voting to end this controversial and unfair traffic enforcement measure. She goes on to say, “Small Business can only grow if we support them and make it convenient to shop local without a hassle”.

This was an important vote because it allows the state to stand up for the people are really tired of being nickel and dimed with pesky fees and hidden taxes that raise revenue outside of the voters influence. This is a great day for the community!
