The threat of the new coronavirus was too large to allow the pool to reopen, Shaker Heights city leadership said in a statement.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Thornton Park pool will be closed through summer 2020, Shaker Heights officials announced Thursday. The threat of the new coronavirus prompted the pool's closure.

"We know this decision will disappoint many residents. We spent countless hours analyzing and exploring a variety of options for opening the pool within the ODOH guidelines and CDC pronouncements," Shaker Heights officials said in a statement.

City staff said they analyzed neighboring public pools, staffing needs, capacity to meet stringent health and safety protocols, resident input and guidance from the CDC and the Ohio Department of Health.

"However, in the final analysis, we determined that the risks to health and safety of residents and staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic remained unacceptably high and the operation of the pool in this environment did not meet the other criteria we established when we undertook this review," city leadership said.

The Shaker Heights ice rink and athletic fields will also remain closed.
