Throwback Thursday: A Postcard from 1951
A mother sends her Ohio University attending son a message for the holidays.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH - The Shaker Historical Society has a new acquisition. The organization found a postcard of Canterbury Club, one of the beautiful clubhouses in the Shaker Heights community. Postmarked Nov. 1, 1951, the card is from a mother to her son at Ohio University - South Quadrangle, Athens, Ohio.
"Dear Steve - sending your shirts out today. Haven't had a frost yet. Expect one tonite. Dahlias still blooming. Only have the tulips to plant. Hope to get them in soon," the card reads. "Do you want to stay home Thanksgiving or go to [illeg]. If we stay home will invite the B-. Love Mother"
The Canterbury Golf Club is a championship golf course where the PGA has been hosted on many occasions. In the 1950s on this postcard, we have a glimpse of life here between a mother and her son away at college. Still trying to take care of him by sending him shirts and looking forward to Thanksgiving, when, presumably, he will be home to Shaker Heights from Ohio University. Things haven’t changed much have they?

The society was able to acquire the postcard thanks to the generous donation of a local couple. The SHS now has some funds to help build and care for the collection. A part of this money has been used to find interesting items about the history of Shaker Heights, including the above postcard.
