Transformer Catches Fire In Shaker Heights [Video]

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — A transformer caught fire on Thursday night in Shaker Heights. The city's fire department shared video of the blaze and urged residents to be cautious near downed power lines.

"With the recent inclement weather SHFD has been fielding multiple weather related and medical calls," the department said on Facebook. "A big thank you as well to Shaker Heights Police for keeping everyone safe and keeping road closures up to date..."

As of 12:30 p.m. Friday, more than 65,000 Ohioans were without power, according to the FirstEnergy outages map. Most cities are expecting power to be restored at about 8 p.m. Friday night.

The city has opened the Stephanie Tubbs Community Center as a warming location for residents without power. There's no food or drink, but there is heat. Pets are also not allowed at the facility.

The Stephanie Tubbs Community Center is located at 3450 Lee Road.

The National Weather Service warned that such powerful wind gusts could mean widespread power outages throughout the region. It seems that forecast has been proved correct.

Many residents have been without power for more than 12 hours.
