University School Hammers Out a Melody

Boys playing with hammers sounds like a worrisome proposition, unless they are members of the Flying Mallets, a percussion ensemble of lower school boys at University School’s Shaker Campus. 

Playing wooden xylophones, metal glockenspiels and other instruments, the happy band of third, fourth and fifth graders will perform on Sunday, May 12, from 1:00-1:45 p.m., in Reinberger Auditorium at Severance Hall .

The performance is part of the pre-concert activities for the Cleveland Orchestra Family Concert, which begins at 2:00 pm.  The concert is entitled Fables, Fantasy and Folklore with Michael Butterman conducting.

"Flying Mallets' boys are a true team of musicians," Director Amanda Matthews, said in news release. "They listen and are respectful of one another, working together cooperatively with traditions and favorite pieces passed on from older to younger students. We are thrilled to be performing at Severance Hall on May 12.”

The boys rehearse before or after school throughout the year. To be considered for the ensemble they must sing in Junior Choir, read notation and display musical leadership through their commitment and behavior.

Performance venues have included Cleveland State University, The College Club of Cleveland, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association's national conference in Pittsburgh in 2011 as well as numerous concerts at University School.
