2 Solon Students Among Final National Merit Recipients

The final 900 National Merit Scholarship Foundation, college-sponsored awards have been announced and two Solon students won scholarships.

SOLON, OH — Last week, the National Merit Scholarship (NMS) Foundation announced the final 900 students receiving college-sponsored scholarships through the program. The final batch of students join approximately 3,200 peers in receiving the awards. Among the 900 recipients are two Solon High School students, and one student from Chagrin Falls.

The scholarship awards range between $500 and $2,000 annually, for up to four years of undergraduate study at the college sponsoring the scholarship. More than 182 colleges are sponsoring NMS winners this year. (To stay up to date on local stories, subscribe to the Patch Solon newsletter. The two students from Solon both attend Solon High School. Both plan on attending in-state schools.

  • Timothy Jin, Solon High School — His probable field of study is computer science. He will attend Case Western Reserve University.
  • Talia Mesnick, Solon High School — Her probable field of study is writing. She will attend Miami of Ohio.

Neighboring Chagrin Falls also had a hometown student win one of the final awards.

  • Maddelana Chesler, Hathaway Brown School — Her probable field of study is environmental science. She received a scholarship from Vanderbilt University, in Tennessee.

In total, nearly 30 students from Ohio received one of the final 900 college-sponsored NMS scholarships.
