433 Solon Students Named AP Scholars

One Solon High graduate was among the highest performing students in all of Ohio.

SOLON, OH — Solon High School had 433 AP Scholars in 2019. One Solon Comet is also among the highest performing students in Ohio.

The AP Scholar designation is given to students that perform well in college-level courses and score highly on an end-of-year exam. High-performing students typically receive college credit for their work.

Neel Mehta, a Solon High graduate, is one of the two top AP Scholars in Ohio. Mehta was the male student with the most AP tests taken and the highest average score on those tests. Mehta took 20 AP courses and earned an average test score of 4.9.

In total, Solon High had one state AP Scholar, 79 National AP Scholars, 192 AP Scholars with Distinction, 61 AP Scholars with Honor and 100 AP Scholars. Solon students took 1,769 AP tests in 31 subject areas in 2019.

“These numbers are extraordinary,” said Solon High School Principal Erin Short.“Our students continue to challenge themselves by choosing these rigorous AP classes. We are so gratified by these prestigious AP awards because they represent the hard work and dedication of the many students who take AP courses and the staff members who teach them. The number of SHS students recognized each year continues to increase and having such a high percentage of students receiving these honors is a clear reflection of the excellence and breadth of our academic program.”

In 2009, Solon High had about 130 AP Scholars. In one decade, the Comets are now churning out 300 more AP Scholars.

Students take AP exams in May, after completing their college-level courses at their high schools. Different designations are awarded according to performances in the course and on the end-of-year tests. Most colleges and universities award credit for strong performances on AP exams.
