87-Year-Old Charged With Drunken Driving In Solon

Police said they stopped the man during a sobriety checkpoint on May 31 on Aurora Road.

SOLON, OH - An 87-year-old man was taken into custody after he was stopped at a sobriety checkpoint in Solon. Police said the man had an open container of alcohol in his car and tested over the legal limit on a breath test.

Solon police held a pre-advertised sobriety checkpoint on Aurora Road on May 31. A little before midnight, officers saw a driver at the checkpoint that was stepping on the brake pedal and gas pedal at the same. This drew police attention.

The driver, an 87-year-old Twinsburg man, was asked to step out of his car. He leaned on officers when he tried to stand up and needed aid walking around. Two officers helped the man to the diversion area of the checkpoint.

Police said the man smelled of alcohol. According to officers, when asked how much he had drank, the man said, "a couple." The 87-year-old took a breath test and blew a .153.

Officers then searched the man's car and found an open container of alcohol. The 87-year-old is being charged with operating a vehicle impaired, prohibited blood alcohol content, and open container. He was released to a family member on the scene.
