Bed Bath & Beyond will close approximately 40 stores in 2019, the company announced this week. The number of stores being shuttered could increase depending on negotiations on lease agreements.

In place of the closed stores, Bed Bath & Beyond officials will open 15 "lab" stores, which will sell more home decor and food products. It is not yet clear which Bed Bath & Beyond locations could be on the chopping block.

During a conference call this week, company representatives expressed their disappointment in first-quarter sales. The New Jersey-based company has more than a thousand stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. The brand also operates Buy Buy Baby and World Market.
