Helping Ohio's Military Heroes

Helping Ohio's Military Heroes- Column from State Representative Marlene Anielski

The Ohio House of Representatives recently honored Ohio’s children who have grown up in military families. As part of April being named the β€œMonth of the Military Child,” it showed that the sacrifices our service members make for their country are shared throughout their entire families.

It is important that we recognize all that our military and their families do to keep us safe. A big part of this is helping veterans returning from combat access the benefits that are available to them through the State of Ohio. Sometimes these benefits are underutilized because the veterans do not know what is available or where to look for help.

To assist in this effort, local county veteran service offices (or CVSOs) are able and willing to assist Ohio’s military heroes. They can help veterans register with the VA and even help them identify their veteran status on their driver’s licenses through the BMV. Additionally, they can help military families with direct financial assistance and providing transportation to VA medical appointments for those who need it. Veterans who seek the assistance of veteran service offices historically receive about 40 percent more of their earned benefits.

Another helpful resource for assistance is the Ohio Veterans Bonus, which awards Ohio veterans with bonuses. Veterans who served in the Persian Gulf, Iraq or Afghanistan can receive $100 a month, up to a maximum of $1,000. Veterans who served in other areas of the world during these respective eras are eligible for $50 a month, up to a maximum of $500. Other benefits are available for family members who have endured the death of a loved one who served their country.
