Drunken Driver Crashes Car In Solon After Drinking Gin And Soda

The man said he hadn't been drinking that day, but police found a grape soda mixed with gin in his car.

SOLON, OH — A 50-year-old man was arrested after he crashed his car on Bainbridge Road last Monday, police said.

Officers were called to 30003 Bainbridge at 5 p.m. on March 11. Callers reported that there had been a car accident in the area.

One of the drivers smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot, glassy eyes. The driver, a 50-year-old from Strongsville, said he hadn't been drinking that day, but had consumed alcohol the night before.

Officers put the man through a series of field sobriety tests and then arrested him. He was taken to the Bedford Heights Jail to perform a breath test. He blew a .226 BAC, police said.

Police then searched the man's vehicle and found a grape soda bottle which smelled like alcohol. When shown the bottle, the man admitted that it was gin and grape soda, police said.

The Strongsville driver has been charged with assured clear distance, operating a vehicle impaired, and open container of alcohol.
