Drunken Driver Falls Asleep Behind Wheel Of Car In Solon: Police

Callers began reporting a man asleep in his car on Aurora Road at 6 a.m. last Friday.

SOLON, OH — An Akron man fell asleep behind the wheel of his car during morning rush hour last Friday, police said. A breath test later confirmed the man was intoxicated, police added.

A little after 6 a.m. on May 10, police were called to Aurora Road, near Liberty. Callers had reported seeing a man asleep at the wheel of his car. When officers arrived, the car was parked at a red light and the driver was still asleep.

The car was running, the driver's foot was on the brake but the car was in gear. For safety and to prevent the man from fleeing, police parked a cruiser directly in front of the sleeping man's car.

When officer woke the man, his car rolled forward, into the police cruiser, according to police.

Once the car was stopped, police interviewed the sleeping man. The driver, a 21-year-old Akron man, couldn't answer police questions and didn't know where he was.

When officers asked if the man had been drinking, he said, "not much." When police pressed him, he said he had "one regular beer."

Field sobriety tests were given to the man and indicated he was impaired. The man was then taken into custody, on suspicion of drunken driving, and was transported to the Solon Correction Center.

At the Correction Center, officers gave the man a breath test, and the 21-year-old blew a .115, police said.
