Officer On The Roof: Fundraiser Puts Cops On Dunkin' Donuts Roofs

To benefit the Special Olympics, Solon Police will be hanging out on the roofs of Dunkin Donuts in Solon and Bainbridge.

SOLON, OH — When you make your Friday trip to Dunkin' Donuts on May 19, you may want to take a second look at the roof. Police departments around Northeast Ohio are participating in the Cop on a Roof fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Ten different Dunkin' Donuts locations throughout the region will have police officers posted up on roofs, starting at 5 a.m. on May 19.

Solon Police will have officers at both the Solon Dunkin' Donuts and the Bainbridge Dunkin' Donuts. If you spot a cop on the roof of your store, you'll have the opportunity to make a donation to the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics. If you do so, you will receive a free donut coupon. If you donate at least $10, you will receive a Dunkin Donut/Law Enforcement Torch Travel Mug and a coupon for a free medium coffee.

A spokesperson for Dunkin' Donuts told Patch the Cop on a Roof fundraiser started more than 15 years ago in Illinois. Given the success the program has had in that state, the decision was made to spread it across the region. This is the first year that Ohio has participated in the Cop on a Roof fundraiser.

However, about three years ago the Solon Police Department ran as similar program at the city's Walgreens, placing officers on scaffolding outside the drugstore. A spokesperson for the police department said it is unclear how many officers will participate in the May 19 event as volunteers are still being gathered.

Lieutenant Bruce Felton for Solon Police said the Torch Run for Special Olympics will make it's way through Solon on Wednesday June 21, entering Solon at about 10:30 a.m. at SR 91 and Miles.

“The Ohio Law Enforcement Torch Run is proud to partner with Dunkin Donuts on the Cop on a Rooftop event,” said Euclid Police Department Captain and Ohio Law Enforcement Torch Run Director Jim Savage, in a statement. “Through events like this we are able to connect with our communities and share the importance of Special Olympics to individuals with intellectual disabilities while raising much needed funds for the program. It is a win win-win for Dunkin Donuts, Law Enforcement, and Special Olympics.”
