Solon by the Numbers: US Census

SOLON, OH - Last month, the US Census Bureau released its five-year collection of data for the American Community Survey. The data examines everything from median household income to average resident education.

The profile of Solon is illuminating. The city is composed largely of families, with approximately 79 percent of all residents belonging to a family. That includes 68.5 percent of families being part of a married couple. About 20 percent of residents live by themselves.

Eighty six percent of Soloners are native US citizens. That leaves a paltry 14 percent for foreign-born residents. Of that 14 percent, the majority are from Asia.

Soloners are also extremely well educated. About 60 percent of residents have at least a Bachelor's degree. On top of that, 97 percent of residents have a minimum of a high school degree.

That level of education has led to steady employment for the majority of residents. People 16 and over enjoy a rate of 64 percent employment in the city, 33 percent were not in the work force. The majority of the Solon workforce is employed by a private company and the number one industry for Soloners is education, health care, and social services (28.8 percent of residents).

The standard education level for Solon residents also means a high degree of career success. According to the Community Survey Data, more than 50 percent of residents are in management positions of some kind. The median household income for Solon is $95,320. Men in Solon are making an average of $85,206, while women are making $57,736.

Only about 4 percent of the population is considered to be living in poverty by government standards. Additionally, 3 percent of the populaton is without health insurance.
