Solon Schools Raise Money For Cancer Research

Students and staff have been raising money at events throughout the week. Now the community has a chance to do its part.

SOLON, OH — Community members may be seeing a whole lot of pink this week. It's the annual Solon Comets for a Cure campaign, with all proceeds generated by the schools going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support breast cancer research.

With events going on throughout the week, the Comets for a Cure campaign kicked off at the boys' soccer game. "Thank you for your support of our first event at the boys’ soccer game this past Saturday and all events for this year’s Comets for a Cure Campaign," said a spokesperson for the Solon Schools.

On Thursday, the Students Against Drunk Driving chapter at Solon High School will host the Staff Dunk Tank. That event will be held outside the Senior Commons, between second and sixth periods. Students voted to determine which teachers, administrators or other Solon High staffers they'd like to see take the watery plunge. More than 20 Solon High employees will get to enjoy a shift in the tanks. Solon students paid $1 per vote. On Thursday, students will pay $1 per ball to throw at the target that triggers the dunking. Students can also pay $5 for six balls, or $10 to just push the dunk button.

Solon High Principal Erin Short volunteered to take first shift in the dunk tank. Short was positioned in the tank from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Students, parents and staff all had the opportunity to dunk the principal Thursday morning.

The rest of the week will also be focused on raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Fans and students at various sporting events throughout the week are invited to wear pink.

The school district is selling hot pick Comets for a Cure shirts and asking students to wear them at home games this week. All this week, Solon is coming together as a school community to have fun and raise money for breast cancer research at the same time.

The remaining games for the community to rock the pink at are:

  • October 12 – volleyball 7 p.m.
  • October 13 – football 7 p.m.
