SOM Center, Aurora Roads To Be Improved In 2018
The city said in a statement that the intersection has been plagued by heavy congestion and a large number of accidents.

SOLON, OH — SOM Center and Aurora roads are both set to undergo construction in 2018, the city announced on social media. The intersection has been a thorn for commuters, with heavy traffic congestion and a high rate of car accidents.
"The heavy congestion at this intersection is due, in part, to the lane arrangement on SOM Center Road. A shared southbound left-through lane on SOM Center Road requires split phasing of the traffic signal which leads to a less efficient signal operation," the city said on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Aurora Road has a lot of commuters heading west to north. The furthest right lane is now a dedicated turnlane for that reason.

The plan is to add an additional lane on SOM Center to eliminate the aforementioned split phasing of the traffic signal. The city said it hopes that will help the intersection become more efficient.
"The split phasing will be eliminated by an additional southbound lane on SOM Center Road to separate the shared left-through lane. The addition of a westbound right turn lane on Aurora Road to northbound SOM Center Road will allow for the full use of the two westbound through lanes while maintaining a westbound right-turnlane," the city said.

The city said it will also be removing and replacing the storm and sanitary structures near the intersection, along with utility poles being relocated, new curbing, replacement of impacted sidewalk aprons and the relocation of some fire hydrants.
