Swerving Vehicle Tries To Blind Solon Cop

After swerving across lanes, the driver of the car activated a light beam on the roof of the vehicle and aimed it an officer's face.

SOLON, OH — An apparently intoxicated driver tried to blind a Solon cop to ensure his getaway. His plan backfired. Read on to find out what happened in that incident and others from the past week.

OVI, Richmond Road - Police were called to a one vehicle crash at 5803 Richmond Road on May 24. Officers found the driver, a 56-year-old from Macedonia, at the scene. The man said he was a diabetic and a squad from Solon Fire and Rescue was called to the scene. The man was rushed to the emergency room after refusing to allow paramedics to test his blood sugar level. When he arrived at the emergency room the man refused treatment and was discharged. The investigating officer smelled alcohol on the man and arrested him. The man was taken to Solon Jail where he refused to take a breath test. Zachery Lanier, 56, was charged with OVI, failure to control, and possession of marijuana.

OVI, Cochran Road - Police arrested a 40-year-old Cleveland man for driving recklessly near Solon Road. While driving, the man swerved across lanes. When he realized he was passing a police patrol car, the man attempted to blind the officer inside using a white light bar attached to the roof of his vehicle. The distraction didn't have the desired effect, and the officer pulled the man over. The Clevelander had glassy eyes and smell of alcohol. After being asked to get out of the car, a bag of marijuana fell from the man's body and landed on the floor of the Jeep. The man refused to take any field sobriety tests and was arrested. An open bottle of vodka, half-empty, was found in the glove box of the vehicle. The man was arrested and taken to Solon Jail where he refused a breath test. Charron Richards, 40, was charged with OVI, open container, drug possession, left of center, and driving under suspension.

Physical Control, Dunkin' Donuts - Police arrested Jeffry Kiarie, 19 of Solon, after he was seen apparently intoxicated in the parking lot of Dunkin' Donuts, 6353 SOM Center Rd. The teenager was sitting in the driver's seat of his car, his car keys in his lap, an open bottle of vodka visible, and apparently impaired. Kiarie refused to perform any field sobriety tests, was arrested, and taken to jail. He refused a breath test. He was charged with physical control and underage possession of alcohol.
