The Week in Solon Sports is just that – a weekly look at Solon High School sports teams in action over the last week and quick previews of what's to come next week. Come to Solon Patch every Friday afternoon to get all the sports you need.

WRESTLING

Solon had three weight class champs at the Northeast Ohio Conference Meet as Brandon Thompson, Anthony Collica and Nathan Hoff captured titles.
Thompson won the 103-pound class with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Mayfield’s Mike Carlone, Collica rolled to a 13-2 decision over Armando Torres of Elyria and Hoff captured the heavyweight title with a pin at the 2:18 mark against Derek Rhodes of Cuyahoga Falls.

The Comets’ Justin Peterson added a third place at 171 pounds with a 6-5 win in the consolation finals while teammate Timothy Duran was fourth at 112 pounds.

UP NEXT: Solon will compete in the Division I sectional at Austintown Fitch next weekend.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Comets suffered one of their toughest losses of the season in a 71-63 double-overtime setback to Hudson.

After the two teams battled to a 54-54 tie during regulation, each team was limited to four points in the first extra session. The Explorers went on a 13-5 run in the second overtime to clinch the win. Chris Cromity led Solon with 19 points while Alex Giterman (14 points), Liam O’Brien (12) and DeAndre Payton (10) also hit for double figures.

All 12 Comet players scored in a 78-41 rout of Parma. Nate Brillhart paced the winners with 15 points while Cromity chipped in with 11.

Solon had five players in double figures against Nordonia but it wasn’t enough in a 76-72 win by the Knights. Brillhart led his team with 16 points while Cromity finished with 15, Brandon Marshall had 11 and both Payton and Denzell Johnson contributed 10 points.

UP NEXT: The Comets, 3-3 in division play and 7-9 overall, play host to Brush tonight and will travel to Cuyahoga Falls on Tuesday evening.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Solon’s ladies won a pair of games to improve to 5-3 in division play and 11-7 overall. Senior Rebecca Caprini tallied a career-high 25 points in an 82-53 rout of North Royalton. The Comets got another 20 points from Skylar Cumberlander while Jaime Gluesing finished with 14 points.

Solon took an 18-point halftime lead and held off host Elyria by a 64-50 count. Gluesing led the winners with 20 points while Kristen Confroy added 18 points, including four three-point baskets.

UP NEXT: The Comet girls play host to Strongsville Saturday and finish up the regular season schedule at Twinsburg, the state’s second-ranked Division I team, on Wednesday.

GYMNASTICS

Solon edged Stow 127.625-127.4 to win the NOC River Division Meet and gain a share of first place in the division. Erin Rabb led the Comet gymnasts with a second-place performance in the all-around with 35.075 points, placing third on beam (8.525), second on vault (8.0), second on bars (8.65) and first on floor (9.0).

Claudia Victoroff was fifth on vault (8.1) for Solon, which picked up places from Zoe Zeid on bars (sixth), Sydney Roth on vault (10th), Rachel Zeaman on beam (eighth) and Mackenzie Mansour on beam (10th).

UP NEXT: The Comets will compete in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights sectional meet Feb. 19th.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Solon’s Michael Kreft began defense of his Division I state title with a first-place showing at the Solon sectional competition. Kreft set a new school record with a 548.15 point total in winning the event and teammate Doug Karn also advances to the district with a fourth-place finish (439.75).

Sivan Mills (453.75) and Taylor Epstein (411.70) placed second and third for the Comet ladies and will compete at Cleveland State next week.

UP NEXT: The swimming sectional will be held Saturday at Case Western Reserve University with qualifiers advancing to next weekend’s Northeast Ohio district.

HOCKEY

Solon had a big win in the first game of the , .

UP NEXT: The second-seeded Comets have a big game at 8 p.m. tonight against a strong Rocky River team that dismantled Kenston in a first round matchup. Tonight’s contest will be held at the Brooklyn Rec Center.
