Are Kids Pledging their Allegiance at Indian Trail?

A parent believes the pledge isn't being said, or is only sometimes being said in the classroom. Indian Trail's principal said the pledge is "alive and well" at the school.

The Pledge of Allegiance — it's routine, it's nostalgic, it's patriotic — it's not being said at ? That's what one parent said.

"The Pledge of Allegiance is alive and well at Indian Trail," said Principal John Lacoste.

Last week Stow resident Angel Woliver commented on the Stow Patch Facebook page that her children were never or only occasionally saying the pledge.

"I believe the Pledge is not being said because this is what my children tell me," said Woliver. "My son said they say it when the teacher remembers ... my daughter said they never say it because the teacher forgets."

Although Lacoste said the "frequency and time of day varies from class to class and is left up to the individual teacher ... we do recite the Pledge at Indian Trail in an on-going manner throughout the year."

There is no mandate or board policy requiring schools or teachers to recite the Pledge daily.

In addition to saying the Pledge regularily, the school says it together for special events like Patriot Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and a special end of the year recognigition event, Lacoste said.

The only complaint Lacoste said the school received about not saying the Pledge is from Woliver, who he said joined Superintendent Russ Jones at the school last week to lead the school in the Pledge.

"If a parent has a concern, I encourage them to contact their classroom teacher," said Lacoste.
