Extended Hours at Indian Trail and Riverview to Make Up Calamity Day
For the next two weeks, students will stay in school half an hour longer.

The unanimously approved extended school days for two weeks at two elementary schools May 16 to make up for a sixth calamity day.
Students at Indian Trail Elementary and Riverview Elementary will have to stay in school a half hour longer every day until May 27 to make up a sixth calamity day.

The two schools were closed April 28 because a knocking out power for 1,600 FirstEnergy Corp. businesses and homeowners.

The Ohio Department of Education ruled that five instructional hours needed to be made up for missing class April 28.
Superintendent Dr. Russ Jones said students will remain in class for an additional half hour until May 27 to make up the time, instead of tacking on an extra school day to the end of the year.
"The vast majority felt that it would be in the best interest of students and families if we used the extended day approach. The clear view is that this approach will provide quality instructional time for all of our students," said Jones. " It allows us more flexibility rather than doing an add on day at the end of the year. "
Riverview and Indian Trail principals spoke with PTA leadership and staff members to get their input on going into school Saturday June 2Β or Monday June 6.Β
"The Saturday and Monday options did not appear to meet that expectation as well," said Jones.
Students normally were let out at 3:30 p.m. and now for the next two weeks, students will be released at 4 p.m.
