Dumb Jocks? Not Here! Spring Student-Athletes Achieve 4.0 GPA

Student-athletes are achieving accolades both on and off the fields this year.

just squashed the "dumb jock" cliche. 

Eighteen percent of the entire student body is currently participating in at least one spring sport — track, tennis, baseball, softball, volleyball and lacrosse.

Many of the student-athletes playing spring sports also have a 4.0 GPA. Overall, 25 percent of the students involved with a team achieved a 4.0 GPA or higher this spring.

"Involvement in athletics requires much time and dedication, and our students are doing a great job of meeting the high expectations set for them," said Athletic Director Cyle Feldman. "They are focused on their academics, and they balance their time with their sport and their studies."

The girls track team earned the average highest marks on their report cards with 39 percent of the team members earning a 4.0 GPA or higher.

While learning athletic skills, strategy and the importance of working as a team, academics is still the top priority for the coaches and high school staff. 

"Coaching is teaching, and our coaches help our students achieve excellence in the classroom which helps shape a successful future. We consistently screen our coaching candidates so they understand our expectations in leading education-based interscholastic athletic programs," said Feldman. "These values always begin with academic achievement and include teamwork, commitment and character (sportsmanship). Our students understand these values provide a foundation for success."
