Bomb Squad Called Out after Device Found Near Shopping Center

The following information was provided by the Strongsville police department

A man on a bike flagged down a police officer about 3 a.m. July 10 after hearing a suspicious beeping on Royalton Road at Ordner Drive.

The officer found a suspicious device lying in the grass near the driveway to , a report said -- it was not only beeping, but had a flashing red light.

Detective Lt. John Janowski, who is a member of the Southwest Enforcement Bureau's Bomb Squad, said the device looked suspicious, but was found to be harmless.

He said someone had wrapped tin foil around a small alarm that stores use to lock expensive items like coats and purses to display racks.

"You could see the red light flashing and there was an audible beep," Janowski said.

The cable on the alarm had been ripped and was stickout of of the foil, he said.

Janowski and another member of the Bomb Squad disposed of the device.
