Borders Vacancy Shouldn't be a Problem, City Says

Royalton Road is a sought-after location for retailers

City officials said they are sorry to see  leave Strongsville, but don't anticipate a problem filling the vacant retail space.

"If they leave, we'll adjust," Economic Development Director Brent Painter said. "That's a great, prime location there."

Borders  it was liquidating all its merchandise and fixtures over the next few weeks.

The Strongsville store, like all the others, is selling off its merchandise. No has been announced.

Painter said he expects another retailer to move into the Borders space quickly.

"That area on (Route) 82 is always in high demand," he said. "People call all the time looking for a spot there."

In fact, Painter said he wouldn't be surprised if a competitor took over because of the popularity of the Strongsville Borders.

"That was a strong-performing store," he said. 

The company declared bankruptcy in February and closed 200 of its 642 stores nationwide earlier this year, including locations in  and Medina.

Strongsville’s Royalton Road location, however, was spared during the first round of closures.
