Mary Coin
By Marisa Silver, March 2013, 322 pages.

Most people have seen that iconic photograph of the mother migrant worker taken during the Great Depression. Marisa Silver uses that photograph as the inspiration for her new novel. The story centers on three women. The migrant worker, the woman who took the photograph, and a present day professor of cultural history. It’s a modern day story with a mix of historical fiction. Silver has managed to take a moment in history and weave a story about photography, women’s history, and family dynamics. If anyone has read Eight Girls Taking Pictures and enjoyed it, this a definite must read for you.

River of No Return
By Bee Ridgway, April 2013, 464 pages.

This debut novel should appeal to both time travel and regency fans. One moment aristocrat Nick Falcott is about to be skewered on a battlefield during the Napoleonic Wars and the next he’s waking up in modern day London as the guest of a mysterious time-travelling group called The Guild. First told that he can never return, he is eventually asked to retrieve something the Guild needs. Nick agrees while also planning to locate the girl he cannot forget. Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series may enjoy this new novel.
