George Grozan of Turkey Meadow Lane is asking school officials to come up with a use for the defunct school by the end of the year rather than consider the building as part of an overall, long-term facilities plan.

A plan for Allen "would provide the nearby homeowners hope instead of an eyesore," Grozan wrote in an email to school officials.

He said the school district has allowed weeds and grass to grow around the building and trash to accumulate on the playground.

School Business Manager Mark Donnelly said last week the district will consider the future of Allen as part of the overall facilities plan.

In response to Grozan's email, Donnelly said grounds crews have been on the site for the last three days to "clean up the debris, trash and overgrown plants and weeds that have taken over the area."

The district will meet with the city, which is leasing and maintaining the recreation fields at the school, to determine what else needs to be addressed.

In addition, Donnelly said the district has been advised by its insurance carrier the playground equipment should be removed because of safety concerns. He said he has brought in a playground inspector to assess the condition of the equipment.
