Railroad Safety Focus Of Strongsville Police Operation

STRONGSVILLE, OH — Drivers may notice Strongsville police stationed around train tracks this week. The department is taking part in Rail Safety Week, an initiative to educate residents about railroad safety and trespassing laws.

Called "Operation Clear Track," police will work with the Amtrak Police Department and Operation Lifesaver to raise awareness of railroad grade crossing laws. This is the third annual rail safety program rolled out by Amtrak and cooperating police departments.

Strongsville officers will be stationed at railroad crossing throughout the city. Police will issue citation and warnings to residents that violate railroad crossing laws. Officials will also hand out safety cards motorists and pedestrians.

Officers will specifically be stationed at crossings on Prospect Road and Westwood Drive on Tuesday.

"The goal of Rail Safety Week is to reduce pedestrian and driver injuries and fatalities around railroad tracks through increased public awareness and enforcement," the police department said in a statement.

There were roughly 2,100 train-motor vehicle collisions in 2017, according to Operation Lifesaver.
