The Ohio State Highway Patrol held a sobriety checkpoint in Northeast Ohio in mid-July, stationing troopers and police officers in downtown Cleveland. The Patrol said its goal is to deter and catch drunken drivers.
"Based on provisional data, there were 33 OVI (impaired driving) related fatal crashes last year in Cuyahoga County," Lieutenant R. Gable, commander of the Cuyahoga Metro Post, said before the previous sobriety checkpoint was held. "State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways."
