Strongsville Residents Warned About Contractor Scams

Police are asking residents to be wary of door-to-door contractors.

STRONGSVILLE, OH — Police have issued a warning to residents about scam artists posing as door-to-door contractors in the city. While some of the contractors may be legitimate, there have also been victims throughout the county of schemes perpetrated by enterprising scammers.

The Strongsville Police Department said there are two common scams to be on the lookout for. "First, NEVER walk outside with a solicitor to check out an alleged problem with your roof, a tree or other issue. Sometimes, an accomplice is hiding nearby, and slips into your house while you're distracted, stealing whatever he can grab," they said on the city's website.

The second way to dodge a scam is to ask to see a current solicitor's permit, which is issued by the police department. If the contractor doesn't have a permit, close the door and contact Strongsville Police at (440) 238-7373.

Residents can also check references on contractors using a variety of websites, the Better Business Bureau or even the Strongsville Building Department.

"Also, don't give money up front to an unknown contractor who promises to return to do the job -- no matter how friendly and honest he seems," the city said.
