Strongsville Student Gets 1st Place At International Science Fair

As a result of his blue ribbon finish, the high school junior will have an opportunity to name a planet.

STRONGSVILLE, OH — A Strongsville High School student recently took first place at a prestigious international science fair. Junior Suraj Srinivasan took the top prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The fair was held in Los Angeles, California.

Srinivasan won the Grand Prize at the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair to qualify for ISEF. In the city of angels, Srinivasan competed with 1,778 students from 78 countries. The fair was divvied into a variety of science and engineering categories.

Biomedical Engineering, the category Srinivasan entered, was the second largest category at ISEF, with 82 submitted projects. Srinivasan's research was "Mosquito-Inspired Insertion Guide PreventsFlexible Intracortical Microelectrodes from Buckling during Implantation."

His first place finish means Srinivasan will receive $3,000 cash and will have an opportunity to name a minor planet as part of the MIT Lincoln Lab.

“This was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life. I had the opportunity to meet scientists, engineers, Nobel Laureates, MacArthur Fellows, and fellow students from all around the world. It was an honor to represent Strongsville High School and the Northeast Ohio region at this competition. I would like to sincerely thank my parents and my research mentors at Case Western Reserve Biomedical Engineering. I would also like to thank the teachers at Strongsville High School for the valuable education and skills they have provided me. I am thankful to receive this award and look forward to conducting and presenting research in the future,” said Srinivasan in a statement.
