What's Going On at Drake and Pearl?

In case you were wondering, the short answer is 'nothing yet'

Back in March, Mayor Tom Perciak announced there were plans in the works to revitalize a former service station at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads.

Perciak, delivering his , said he would soon be able to share some "great news" about that corner.

Four months later: No news yet.

Strongsville's Planning Secretary, Carol Oprea, said no plans have been submitted yet for the former gas station site.

Economic Development Director Brent Painter said this week that while the city does expect the property to be redeveloped, he has not heard of any imminent plans for that corner.

"The last we were told, they planned to redevelop the site," Painter said. "We believe the property is going to be developed and cleaned up."

Not known is who will do the renovating. Painter said the property owner is not actively marketing the parcel, although several groups have looked at it in recent months.

It seems like an obvious place for 's new Get Go gas station. Company officials have said they intend to build a Get Go in conjunction with the , either on site or nearby.

But Painter said Giant Eagle reps are mum, so far, on where the station will go. 

Perciak made his prediction about the Drake-Pearl corner after someone in the audience asked about cleaning up the site of the former gas station, which has sat idle for some time.

It is often difficult to build on a gas station site because of the environmental clean-up costs, but Perciak said he believed that problem was "going to take care of itself."
