Happy Saturday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know today in Toledo.


First, today's weather:

More clouds than sun. High: 46 Low: 28.


Here are the top stories in Toledo today:

  1. An unloaded BB gun was confiscated from a student at Navarre Elementary School on Friday. The school's assistant principal was alerted to the possibility of such an incident late Thursday, and waited for the student to arrive. No threats were reportedly made to school personnel or students and the offender will face discipline. (WTOL)
  2. 25-year-old Martin Hood was shot late Thursday night at the Mobil gas station parking lot at the intersection of N. Detroit and Central Avenue. Toledo Police are investigating and plan to review security tapes. Neighbors report a large altercation broke out between several people, resulting in shots fired. (WTOL)
  3. All eight hospitals in Lucas County are now on EMS bypass, causing the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department to urge Toledoans to only call 911 in true emergencies. COVID patients taking up hospital beds are the cause of the bypass, with people calling for ambulances because they have symptoms. (13abc Action News)
  4. Toledo's record high homicide numbers this year are having an impact on our city's school children, according to Toledo Public Schools Executive Director of Student Intervention and Supports Heather Baker. There's an increased concern for students experiencing trauma if they have witnessed a murder, heard gunshots, or know of family or friends who were killed. (13abc Action News)
  5. Lucas County Children Services is hosting foster training throughout December in an effort to add homes to its foster care network. The COVID pandemic disrupted the agency's progress in finding new homes for our community's children. There are around 796 children in care and only about 211 foster homes currently. (WNWO NBC 24)

  • Northwest Ohio has seen incredibly high COVID numbers, with some of the area's smaller hospitals at capacity and unable to transport patients in need of serious medical procedures. For example, a patient may need to see an interventional radiologist at St. Vincent's in Toledo, but transports are shut down at this time due to the number of COVID patients. (13abc Action News)
  • Several roads will be closed today for the East Toledo Holiday Parade. Local traffic will be permitted if it does not affect the safety of the parade route, and the festivities begin at 11 AM. (WTOL)
  • Owens Community College has received a $1.16 million Educational Opportunities Center grant to be used for adult continuing education. Specifically, Owens will receive $235,050 per year for five years and the program targets unemployed workers, low-wage workers, and students returning to their postsecondary studies.
