📰 News we're reading

1. Community raises more than $28K for Toledo woman after scam, eviction (cleveland19.com) — A deaf Toledo woman and her son are in temporary respite care after losing $12,000 to a scam and being evicted from their Toledo home, but neighbors have rallied with more than $28,000 in donations. Supporters are now racing to turn that generosity into a permanent local housing solution before their respite stay ends in mid-October.

2. Prosecutors to turn over vast majority of evidence in Old West End Festival shooting case (wtol.com) — Prosecutors in Toledo say they'll turn over nearly all evidence this week in the Old West End Festival mass-shooting case, giving defense attorneys a huge trove of videos and reports to review. Two men remain jailed without bond on dozens of felony counts, and a new pretrial hearing in Lucas County Common Pleas Court is set for October, when a trial date could be chosen.

3. History of the Ohio Division of Wildlife: The birth of conservation (farmanddairy.com) — Toledo's Robert Cummings was one of three original Ohio Fish Commissioners in 1873, helping launch the state's formal conservation efforts. This historical look traces how overhunting, dams, and pollution devastated wildlife and fisheries, and how early laws and agencies slowly began protecting fish, songbirds, and habitats statewide.

4. Groups seek clarity on governor candidates' data center plans (toledoblade.com) — A University of Toledo political scientist weighs in as Ohio's governor candidates pitch competing plans to rein in data center growth and electricity costs. Both Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy emphasize protections for residents, but business and policy groups say the proposals lack crucial details on enforcement and economics.

5. Trump administration looks to lower beef prices by increasing imports (wtol.com) — From Toledo cattle producers are reacting to the Trump administration's plan to lower beef prices by importing about 300,000 metric tons of cheaper ground beef. Ohio industry leaders warn the move could hurt already-strained ranchers and slow efforts to rebuild the U.S. cattle herd, even as shoppers face high prices at the meat counter.
