📰 News we're reading

1. U.S. EPA releases list of chemicals located at Brent Industries during time of explosion (13abc.com) — Toledo City Council's Sustainability Committee will hold a special public meeting Wednesday at 5 p.m. to discuss the deadly Brent Industries explosion and ongoing investigations. Federal and state agencies have listed chemicals stored on-site, are monitoring air quality, and say no hazardous levels were detected, while nearby residents continue reporting symptoms and seeking answers about long-term safety.

2. 'This is deliberate illegal dumping': Another Toledo recycling site overwhelmed by trash (wtol.com) — Toledo officials are dealing with another major illegal dumping mess at the Monroe and Secor recycling site, just weeks after a costly cleanup at Jackman and Laskey. Local leaders warn that taxpayers ultimately pay for these abuses and urge residents to report dumping, follow recycling rules, and use bulk pickup or landfill options instead to protect neighborhood cleanliness and city budgets.

3. Diocese of Toledo threatens legal action over City of Toledo's proposed historic landmark designations (wtol.com) — Toledo City Council is moving toward designating the closed Sacred Heart and Good Shepherd churches as historic landmarks, with a final vote expected Sept. 8 and a public hearing Sept. 10. City leaders say landmark status could unlock tax credits and new uses for the buildings, while the Diocese of Toledo strongly opposes the move and is threatening legal action over property and religious freedom concerns.

4. Researchers investigate harmful effects of Lake Erie algal bloom toxins (13abc.com) — Researchers based in Toledo are closely studying the massive algal bloom in western Lake Erie, now concentrated in Maumee Bay, to better understand its toxins and health risks. Four ongoing projects are examining nutrient causes, types of toxins, how they become airborne, and potential impacts from inhaling them, while officials still urge residents to avoid visible algae clusters this month.

5. Toledo Sweeps Purdue Fort Wayne (getsomemaction.com) — Toledo volleyball fans just saw the Rockets notch their fourth straight win, sweeping Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 at Savage Arena behind standout performances from several players. The team now turns to a big home matchup against Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 5, with a 4 p.m. first serve and a White Out theme encouraging fans to pack the arena in white.
