Hello, everybody. Brad King here with your fresh copy of the Toledo Daily, filled with all the things you need to know about what's going on in town.

First, today's weather:

A passing afternoon shower. High: 76 Low: 62.

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. After Issac Carpenter, 21, was shot to death last weekend his family has gone on record to dispel rumors he was associated with gangs. Instead, Issac's friends and family say he was the victim of senseless gun violence while trying to protect his sister during a domestic dispute on Vance Street. (WTOL)
  2. Joseph Bergman, 68, received no jail time for sex crimes committed against a disabled woman after taking a plea deal in the Ottawa Court of Common Pleas Wednesday. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost made the plea deal which removed the most severe charges Bergman was facing, including two counts of rape. (WTOL)
  3. Fundraising efforts are underway after the Autism Model School on Tremainsville Road in Toledo was broken into several times since early June. The suspects stole cell phones, tablets, and destroyed several classrooms and equipment. (WTVG)
  4. More than 1,000 backpacks will be given away at this year's Hoodstock Foundation event at Ottawa Park on July 31. Hoodstock has championed economic prosperity and beneficial change for the past 20 years and the event will feature live music, vendors, kids' activities and bouncy houses. (WNWO NBC 24)
  5. On Thursday Toledo man Ronnie Spence pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony arson charges for shooting a flare gun into the window of a home on Western Avenue in March. Spence will be sentenced on August 25 and is being held on a $100,000 bond at no 10%. (WTVG)

Are you a Toledo resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Toledo Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
