Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:
- Joanne Smith of Point Place was sleeping on her living room couch when a car crashed through her home around 2:30 AM early Sunday morning. Smith was uninjured despite the house falling on her, and the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee but police arrived in time to stop him. (WTOL)
- The City of Toledo has recorded its first homicide of 2022 after 58-year-old Ray Gott was found shot in a vehicle at the intersection of Detroit and Phillips Saturday night. There have been several vehicle-involved shootings this year, with one fatality in Springfield Township on January 16. (WTOLWTOL)
- A Friday afternoon crash at the intersection of Monroe and Secor has sent two people to the hospital and injured a third. A spokesperson from the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department reports the crash occurred between a semi truck and multiple passenger vehicles and is under investigation. (13abc Action News)
- 18 people had to be rescued off the coast of Catawba Island after a sheet of ice separated from the land in Lake Erie on Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard performed the rescue after the people were spotted by helicopter rescuers from Detroit. (Toledo Patch)
- Several Northwest Ohio airports will receive funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that was signed into law by President Biden in 2021. The Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport will receive over $1.5 million, with funds also going to Put-in-Bay Airport, Middle Bass Island Airport, Kelleys Island Land Field Airport, and more. (Toledo City Paper)

- The Toledo-Lucas County Library is giving away 1300 sets of hats and gloves at all 8 of its locations thanks to a donation by the Library Legacy Foundation and Susan Conda. The sets are limited to 1 per person and will be available until they're gone. (13abc Action News)
- Research at the University of Toledo led by Dr. Juan Jaume is exploring the possibility of curing Type 1 diabetes, which currently affects 1.6 million Americans. Dr. Jaume's research is still in the testing and peer-review stages, but he has received a grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to further explore these possibilities.
