Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:
- 23-year-old Toledo woman Kaycie Eckhoff pleaded guilty Tuesday on charges relating to the death of her son, Lelind Ireland, who was only six months old. Eckhoff left her child in a bathtub at the Suburban Extended Stay on Reynolds Road in February 2021 without proper supervision and the child drowned. (13abc Action News)
- 61-year-old Timothy Grant is currently on the run from the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshalls, Toledo Police, and the Lucas County Sheriff's Office for crimes committed in Toledo, Perrysburg, Northwood, and Findlay. Grant is also in violation of the State of Ohio's Sexual Offender Registry requirements and has been known to stay near Consaul and Nevada streets. (WNWO NBC 24)
- A Toledo man and two others were arrested after leading police on a car chase after a theft at the Walmart in Bowling Green on Tuesday. 29-year-old Briceson Embry, 28-year-old Tiffanie Fears, and 27-year-old Damon Gibson were all booked into the Wood County Jail on multiple charges. (WNWO NBC 24)
- Battalion Chief Allison Armstrong has been named the new Toledo Fire Chief for the TFD by Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, becoming the first female fire chief in Toledo's history. Chief Armstrong will officially begin her duties on February 4 and has been working with the department since 2000. (WTOL)
- The University of Toledo College of Law has been named number 4 of the top 10 national law schools for women. The survey, conducted by the Princeton Review, takes into account what resources are available for women, the percentage of students identifying as women, and direct answers from student surveys. - UToledo cancer researcher Dr. Jian-Ting Zhang has been honored as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Zhang's research specifically revolves around drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy treatments. (Press Release Desk)
- The University of Toledo women's swimming and diving team has been selected as a Scholar All-American team by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The award comes as the team's cumulative GPA is 3.79, the highest of all women's division 1 teams. (Press Release Desk)
- To commemorate the tragic line-of-duty deaths of Toledo firefighters Steve Machcinski and Jamie Dickman 8 years ago, several community members brought donuts to all Toledo Fire stations during shift change. The donuts were provided by members of the community and Bakery Unlimited. (WTOL)
- The Safety Net at the Zepf Center is a 24/7 emergency center for youth in crisis. Especially considering the frigid temperatures as of late, the Safety Net wants to spread awareness of its availability as a place of refuge during difficult times. (WNWO NBC 24)
- The relatively mild winter has allowed the City of Toledo to save money on road salt used to keep the streets clear. The salt is stored at Arms Dock along Summit Street and can be made into brine for pre-treating the roads, saving the city even more money. (WTOL)
