🌱 Toledo City Council Calls For Rail Study + TPS Student Saved

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Toledo.

(Patch Media)

Happy Thursday, people of Toledo! Here's everything going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy and breezy. High: 53 Low: 38.

Here are the top five stories in Toledo today:

  1. The Craig Memorial Bridge in Downtown Toledo is closed for the foreseeable future due to a mechanical failure. An original piece from the 1950s called a "contactor" is the root of the problem and the bridge is stuck partially open. (WTOL)
  2. Toledo City Councilwoman Theresa Morris is advocating for two studies into rail systems running from Toledo to Columbus and Ann Arbor. Despite potential high costs, advocates say such a rail system will have a huge economic benefit for the entire region. (WTVG)
  3. A Toledo Public Schools student was stopped from jumping off a bridge with help from Toledo Police Officer Ryan Tierney and two TPS resource officers. A number of mental health and wellness services are available in Toledo for anyone struggling, such as the Rescue Mental Health, Unison, NAMI of Greater Toledo, and the Trevor Project. (WTOL)
  4. A reflective sculpture is being constructed in the 300 block of N. Summit Street as part of the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and ProMedica's Art in Public Places Program. The sculpture is inspired by Toledo's manufacturing history and was created by Studio KCA. (WNWO NBC 24)
  5. An exhibit on the history of the Toledo area's participation in the Underground Railroad will be on display at the National Museum of the Great Lakes through June 16. The exhibit is sponsored in part by Heritage Sylvania and demonstrates the Northwest Ohio region's importance in getting people to freedom through Michigan and Canada. (WTVG)

  • The historic Ohio Theatre in North Toledo is receiving a $2.5 million upgrade thanks in part to U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur. Upgrading the site, which was constructed in 1921, will hopefully help revitalize the entire neighborhood as well. (WTOL)
  • UToledo law student Alona Matchenko has provided an update on her family's escape from war-torn Ukraine. Ms. Matchenko reports her family, including two younger siblings, her mother, and step-father, have been welcomed in by a family of strangers in Poland. (WTVG)
