Hello again, everybody. It's Friday in Toledo and I'm back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in town. Enjoy...

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and nice. High: 77 Low: 51.

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. The Lucas County coroner has ruled LaVetter Miller's death a homicide after she was shot in 1997 but lived until May 2022. The Lucas County Prosecutor is waiting to hear from the Toledo Police before bringing new charges against the shooter, who already served nine years for felonious assault. (WTOL)
  2. Toledo-based drag queen-owned food truck "Maybe Cheese Born with It" will be featured on the Food Network's The Great Food Truck Race this season. Maybe Cheese Born with It will be at the Old West End festival this weekend. (WTOL)
  3. Toledo man Derrick Lamont Jones, 57, pleaded guilty to crimes of defrauding a Toledo church group, Seniors Unlimited in Pontiac, MIchigan and American Heritage Trails in Fort Wayne, Indiana. 4. After the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House passed House Bill 99, Governer DeWine has signaled he will sign it into law, allowing teachers and staff to carry firearms in "school safety zones." The law also would create the Ohio Mobile Training Team and lessens the required hundreds of hours of training imposed by an Ohio Supreme Court ruling last year. (WNWO NBC 24)
  5. Eighteen-year-olds Jim Terry Jr. and Aaron Thomas Jr. were arrested for an alleged robbery at the Broadway Street Rite Aid Wednesday night. Both are charged with robbery with attempt to inflict serious physical harm on another. Terry is also charged with failing to stop after an accident, operating a vehicle without a license and not leaving enough space between moving vehicles. (WTVG)

Are you a Toledo resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Toledo Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
