🌱 Toledo Olympian Punched By Cop + First Solar Invests Millions In OH

Welcome back, Toledo. I'm here in your inbox per usual to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

  • Body cam footage shows that Olympic boxing medalist and Toledo native Oshae Jones was punched in the back of the head and neck by a Toledo Police Officer during a misdemeanor arrest
  • Ye Old Cock and Bull will host a benefit this Thursday after the murder of Corey Cole, Jr. - the 22-year-old son of Distant Cousinz musician Corey Cole Sr.
  • First Solar announces a new $1 billion solar plant in the southeastern United States along with an $185 million upgrade to its Ohio facilities thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act

  1. Protesters stood outside the courtroom during Olympic medalist and native Toledoan Oshae Jones' court appearance after body cam footage was released showing a Toledo Police officer strike Ms. Jones in the back of the head and neck during an arrest. Ms. Jones' attorney Sean Walton is asking for the misdemeanor charges against her to be dropped after she was arrested during a gathering on her front porch when she was reportedly asleep. (WTVG)
  2. A benefit concert will be held at Ye Old Cock and Bull this Thursday for the family of 22-year-old Corey Coley Jr., who was shot in the back of the head this past Friday at the Weiler Homes. His father, Corey Coley Sr., is a member of legendary Toledo music group Distant Cousinz and hopes the event will help cover funeral costs for his son, who just found out he was going to have a child of his own - Corey Coley III.   3. 71-year-old Robert Demars has been arrested for shooting a 37-year-old woman in the spine after an altercation in the 4100 block of Douglas Road around 6:30 PM Monday. Demars was charged with felonious assault and the victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. (WTVG)
  4. UPDATE: Toledo Police have identified the woman killed in a tragic accident on Monday as 54-year-old Sherri Long. Ms. Long was struck by a falling tree and outside her home on Beverly Drive near Copeland Boulevard. Ms. Long's daughter is a student at Toledo Public Schools and the district shared a message of sorrow to the students' families on Tuesday. (WTOL)
  5. On Tuesday First Solar announced the construction of a new $1 billion solar panel manufacturing plant in the southeastern U.S. as well as a $185 million upgrade for the company's current Ohio facilities. The new projects will create 850 new jobs and have been aided by the Inflation Reduction Act. (WNWO)

  • Owens Community College announced plans for an upgraded Library and Learning Commons. The $3.2 million project is located at the original College Hall and features a 15,000 square foot facility with study rooms and tutoring spaces. (WNWO NBC 24)
  • TARTA will launch an on-demand microtransit pilot program. The $3.2 million grant from the Ohio Dept. of Transportation will allow for curb-to-curb service and rideshares arriving in 30-60 minutes.(WTVG)
  • St. Charles Hospital associates delivered school supplies to Coy Elementary on Monday. The annual drive helps lessen the burden put on families and the most donations were collected by the cardiovascular team. (WNWO NBC 24)
  • Toledo gas prices decrease for 11th straight week with an average of $3.55/gallon. (WTOL)
  • The first graduate in the Lourdes University craft beverage program will graduate in December. The program began in 2019 and has accepted five new students this year. (WTOL)
